The emergencies this week throughout BC have demonstrated our government’s lack of preparedness. Our NDP government must use every tool in its toolbox during emergencies and act without delay. Our state of emergency was called much too late - after landslides and massive floods - and key resources weren't activated. The NDP government was not engaged, while municipalities had to step up to provide critical information through a patchwork approach in their absence.

All of this week’s devastation has had a compounding effect on an already broken 9-1-1 emergency dispatch service which the government has known about for many months, leaving people on hold and delaying dispatch of emergency responders, and a paramedic shortage.

We have to do better. It's time to use Alert Ready, improve emergency communications to be proactive and not reactive, stop playing a blame game and take accountability at the provincial level, mobilize resources, and ensure that we're here for British Columbians before, during, and after a crisis.

I want to thank all the British Columbians who have stepped up to help neighbours in this difficult time. The stories of people coming together have been truly inspiring.

Stay safe. We're all in this together.
